Asatru and the Ancient Runes

Few things invoke a sense of mystery in the Indo European soul like the ancient Runes! Six days of the week are NAMED after our ancient gods – yet a few people are even aware of this simple fact! In an age where so many people are going back to their roots and rediscovering the cultural spiritual heritage of their ancestors, let those of Indo European roots not be left out of this prfound experience! There are 40,000 years of pre-Christian history to the experiences of our ancient tribes. Those of Indo European descent, or who feel the call in their soul of the ancient gods of the North need to make time for themselves to attend the following four sessions!

Edmonton Pagan Learning Circle Fellowship (EPLC)

Edmonton Pagan Learning Circle Fellowship – EPLC, is an interactive pagan spiritualist discussion group that is family friendly, focusing on shared pagan learning, The EPLC invites everyone to join the monthly circles and annual events to meet other pagans and their families, while sharing different traditions within pagan spirituality. EPLC offers pagans a safe place to start or continue their spiritual journey with a group of accepting individuals.
The Spirit Lantern Learning Circle

The name “Imbolc” comes from the Irish Gaelic phrase “i mbolg” which means “in a belly.” This is a reference to lambs being “in the belly” which was an ancient seasonal marker signifying the beginning of the lambing season and thus the first signs of Spring’s arrival. It is a festival sacred to Bríd, the Irish Goddess of Fire, the forge, poetry and healing. It is also associated with the tradition of Groundhog day: it is said the Cailleach (the winter crone or hag) gathers firewood on this day. If she intends for winter to be a long one, she will make the day sunny and bright (casting a shadow to frighten the groundhog in modern tradition) so she can see better to collect more wood. If the day is foul, that means the Cailleach is asleep and winter is almost over (no shadow to frighten the groundhog). Come gather with us on this night as we honor Bríd and prepare to welcome in the coming Spring!

The British Isles are a treasure trove of folklore, a place where monuments to the Old Gods still stand, where wood spirits still roam the forest, and local folk traditions retain the flavor of the ancient Pagan rituals from which they sprang. In small towns and villages all across western Europe, unique and curious local customs persist, relics of the region’s Pagan past. Some, like Morris Dancers and the Maypole on the first of May, are common practices across the four isles even in modern times. Other customs are less well known, remnants of a much older culture whose history has been lost in time, but whose rituals remain part of the collective unconscious of the land and its people. One of these is the Yuletide custom of “First Foot”, a quaint practice found in rural areas of Scotland even to the present day. In recent years it has been performed on December 31st, but historical sources trace it back to Twelfth Night (January 6), and even further to the long night before the winter solstice.

The custom is based on principles of sympathetic magic; the focus of the rite is to end the festival season in a position in which one wishes to remain for the coming year. Every house in the village is turned out and scrubbed from top to bottom. New clothing is purchased, and cupboards and larders stocked with food, including traditional Yuletide treats like fruitcake and shortbread. Each member of the household procures a bottle of good liquor (whiskey for the gentlemen, sherry for the ladies) to be used for the occasion. Pockets and purses are filled with as much cash money as possible, to safeguard the omen for a prosperous year.

Preparations become frantic as evening approaches, for everything must be ready before midnight. At twelve o’clock, villagers must be inside their warm and spotless homes, dressed in their finery, coiffed and perfumed. Anyone caught out of doors runs the risk of being swept up in the terrible Wild Hunt, a winter phantasm described in myth and legend all over western and central Europe. Those who ran afoul of the Wild Hunt risked being kidnapped and carried off to the Land of the Dead. When the clock strikes twelve, the house is considered to be magically “sealed”, and no one is permitted to leave until the arrival of the First Foot.

The First Foot is, simply, the first person to step over the home’s threshold after midnight. Usually, this individual is pre-selected according to a specific set of criteria: a young man, with dark hair and a muscular build, is considered preferable for the job. In fact, it is exceedingly unlucky to be first-footed by a fair-haired person! The description of an appropriate First Foot matches that of the mythical character Old Nick, a trickster-like spirit closely tied to the Christian devil, but widely believed by modern historians to be based on the Pagan deity, the Horned God.

Once the First Foot has crossed the threshold, he is greeted with a glass of liquor by the host, and offers a drink from his own bottle in return. He then lays bread, coal and salt upon the hearth, traditional offerings to the Goddess for blessing the household. Once this ritual has been satisfactorily performed, the magical seal is broken and members of the household are free to go out and First Foot their neighbours.

As the rite involves the consumption of many glasses of liquor by the First Foot, it is not completely surprising that he would sometimes fail to complete his rounds of the village. Therefore, other physically suitable males, once freed from the spell in their own homes, will take it upon themselves to First Foot their neighbours. Occasionally, some household might be forgotten in the excitement; after a period of time has passed, the most suitable member of the household will sneak out the back door and come round to the front to perform the honours himself. Even in modern times, traditional folk continue to honour the Old Gods in the old ways.

On Wednesday, Nov. 23, B.C. Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert Bauman ruled to uphold Canada’s existing Polygamy Law. Section 293 of Canada’s Criminal Code, the section of Canadian law in question, adopted in 1890, was, in it’s original form, intended for Mormons moving in to Canada from the U.S.

It seems that Canada’s first Prime Minister, Sir John A. MacDonald, wanted religious diversity in the newly opened west, but wanted no part of the Mormon polygamous lifestyle, and in the original wording, this section was directly aimed at Mormons.

Today, the law simply refers to “any form of polygamy”…

293. (1) Every one who

(a) practises or enters into or in any manner agrees or consents to practise or enter into

(i) any form of polygamy, or

(ii) any kind of conjugal union with more than one person at the same time,

whether or not it is by law recognized as a binding form of marriage, or

(b) celebrates, assists or is a party to a rite, ceremony, contract or consent that purports to sanction a relationship mentioned in subparagraph (a)(i) or (ii),

is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years.

In his ruling, Chief Justice Bauman said;

“I have concluded that this case is essentially about harm,”…“More specifically, Parliament’s reasoned apprehension of harm arising out of the practice of polygamy. This includes harm to women, to children, to society and to the institution of monogamous marriage.”

Sam Wagar, of  The Congregationalist Wiccan Association of British Columbia, and the only Wiccan Priest to file an affidavit in this case, clearly disagreed with the ruling;

  “The judge made the error of equating the norm of monogamy with all good things and the practice of polygamy with all bad things.”

Court documents filed on behalf of the CWABC by Mr. Wagar make clear the position that section 293 of the criminal code restricts religious freedom;

[467] Mr. Wagar deposes that since he is prohibited from performing a marriage ceremony that involves more than two adults, he is unable to act freely in accordance with his religious beliefs when approached by people involved in polygamous or polyamorous relationships.

I spoke to Mr. Wagar about his reaction to this decision;

“First, from the legal POV: the charter arguments were sound, that polygamy is allowed or encouraged as an article of faith in several faith traditions and that restricting it is an infringement on religious liberty…a core value of society must be to encourage lasting and honourable committed relationships between adults…”

“I agree that Patriarchal polygyny as practiced by such as the FLDS is harmful to women and children. However, that is not the only form that multiple adult families take. This is a point which the judge acknowledges and then chooses to ignore in favour of a bias for monogomy.”

“All acts of love and pleasure are acts of praise to the Goddess. This foundation statement of belief in Wicca means nothing if it cannot be acted upon”, said Wagar.

“We grow as human beings and survive as a society by making committed relationships with others that are not based on immediate gratification but on love and honour. The number of partners is not important, the quality of the commitment is.”

“I anticipate it being overturned on appeal.”

The group Stop Polygamy in Canada welcomed the decision;

“Chief Justice Bauman has sent a message around the world that Canada’s laws protecting the equality rights of women are to be protected. This decision also honours Canada’s international agreements protecting the rights of women and children. Canada’s doors are closed to polygamists and the practice of polygamy within our borders is still a crime.”

The Canadian Polyamory Advocacy Association points out that the decision applies specifically to those “Poly” relationships which officially sanction their bonds with public/religious ceremony;

“Polyamorists are relieved they can be in loving egalitarian conjugal relationships without criminal sanction,” said CPAA legal counsel, John Ince, “Common law relationships are clearly not prohibited. Polyamorists who are dealing with immigration or family custody issues for instance now need no longer worry about being considered to be criminals”.

Over at The Wild Hunt, Jason discusses the implications of this decision for Polyamorous Pagans;

“Considering how many Canadian Pagan polyamorous families have had public marriage/handfasting ceremonies this interpretation of the law places them on the same legal footing as a polygamous Mormon (or Muslim) household. This, in essence, forces consensual multi-partner arrangements to stay in the closet, and avoid anything that might be interpreted by a “sanctioning” event within their community.”

We want to know how you feel about this. In this case, is society justified in limiting religious freedom to ensure the safety of the women and children involved in places like Bountiful, B.C., an FLDS (Fundamentalist Mormon) stronghold, which practices Patriarchal polygyny?

From Our Supporter: Where Faeries Live (10991-124 Street)

What’s New?

Where Faeries Live is excited to let you know of some new products that have come in. We have picked new stock just in time for your Yule celebrations.

We have received a new shipment of Witch and Fairy Balls! Come and pick yours while we still have a large selection of colours and styles.

Check out the Metal Wall Art and express yourself using “Expressions”or create your own using the “Words”. We think you love them as much as we do.

Where Faeries Live is the first store in Edmonton to carry Robert Simmons’ “The Pocket Book of Stones”. Luckily we have managed to procure some rather rare crystals (Guardianite, Rosophia, Bustamite, Azeztulite, and a great many others). If you don’t see them at the store or on the website just ask; we most likely have it in stock.

Did you know that we do special orders of books and other items? If we do not have the item you’re looking for let us know and we will bring it in for you. Most special orders have a fairly quick turnaround time (if your item is going to be longer than 3 weeks we let you know.)

For those customers outside the greater Edmonton area we can do mail order for you. Shipping is done by expedited parcel and usually takes 2-3 business days to get to you (depending on location.)

Where Faeries Live will close at 5:00 p.m. on Christmas Eve and be closed during Christmas Day.

This is the symbolic full moon name for December. Also known as the “Long Night Moon.” Coming full circle, we find ourselves again in the frigid realm of winter. This is the month when some of the coldest and the longest nights live. Hence the Native American full moon names for this full moon of December.

Hello Everyone! I hope you are doing well and enjoyed Samhain. This is the time of year that I really look forward to as the excitement for the Holidays grows. For me it is the joy of giving and spending time with friends and family that I love. While I am not a fan of snow, I enjoy a warm house and a crackling fire in the fireplace, some hot chocolate, and good company. I hope your November is filled with all of these things!

Given that the month of November is the first month of the pagan new year, I am reflecting on the past year and want to hear from you with regard to what you want to see in the Quibbler. The previous year the Quibbler had less than 75 subcribers, and today we are over 200 strong! I want to ensure that the Quibbler is a valuable resource, so please lend us your thoughts at communityquibbler@shaw.ca.

From Our Supporter: Where Faeries Live (10991-124 Street)

What’s New?

New to Where Faeries Live: taper candles! You’ve been asking for them for years and we finally found a supplier of high quality candles from Denmark. Smokeless, dripless, and coloured all the way through (not just dipped like some other candles), the coloured candles are seven inches long. The gold and silver candles are 10 inches long. Perfect for making spell candles or rituals that call for something a little larger than a 4 inch ritual candle.

The Beaver’s Moon

The full moon name for November is the Beaver Moon. As we’ve seen in the prior months, each symbolic name references a point within the epitome of the month. Beavers are coming into their fullness in November. So much so that the Natives knew to set traps early in the month because the beaver would be in her glory.

The EPLC exists to share experiences, learn from others, build community, havefun and teach each other and our children acceptance for different spiritual paths and lifestyles. EPLC offers pagans a safe place to start or continue their spiritual journey with a group of accepting individuals.
Spirit Lantern Learning Circle

Samhain, for the Gaelic for “Summer’s End” is the third and final harvest and is generally held to be the Pagan New Year Festival. It is a festival with many traditions associated with it, not the least of which being communication with the dead and divination of the future. It is a time when the past and the future come together in the present and the veil between this world and the next is the thinnest, allowing the spirits of the departed to either return for a day and a night of revelry with their survivors or for the survivors to engage in psychopomp work (ushering their dead onward). It is a time that reminds us that we are not eternal in this incarnation but that what comes afterwards is not to be feared, rather celebrated. Please join us this night as we honor those who have gone before us and seek to divine a message of hope for those yet to come.

Date: Sunday, October 30th
Time: doors open at 7:00 p.m. and the rite begins promptly at 7:30 p.m.

Introduction to Tarot

This workshop is for the person who is interested or intrigued by Tarot, but lacks knowledge or skill with it. This course will take the participant through the history and origins of the tarot, how Hollywood has added mystery and mystique to tarot. Next, we will look at the variety of decks out there, and discuss other card divination systems out there.
We will look at caring for your cards, cleansing them, and picking a deck for self.
We will then look at learning the cards, and the symbolism. Then, we will learn about how to interpret the cards using a journal, symbolism guides, colour, and intuition as well, learning about how picture language of the tarot works.
We will examine the Celtic Cross layout, and other layouts, including making up your own lay out. We will go over ways to engage tarot as a student, and ways to apply tarot to other systems, such as numerology, and so forth.
Finally, we will get to know one another, and learn to do practice reading for each other in the class, and talk about how to read for others, ways to word interpretations for others, and the ethics of reading.
Participants will need a tarot deck and a notebook. Handouts will be provided. An opportunity to participate in a private elist to ask questions during the class, and online chat schedule will be available. Course will also include visual slideshow using power point of the various points of information. With registration, details of this will be available.
The Hunters Moon is the full moon of October. This is another symbolic moon name that’s obvious. This time represents the onset of prime hunting season. Heavy foliage is drifting away as quick as the season, and deerare a bit buggy this time of year.
Date: September 24, 2011 starting at 11AM
Location: Eastwood Community Hall and Park
11803-86 Street Northwest Edmonton
For more information, email Ed at Edmonton.Pagan.Pride@gmail.com or call
(780)454-0187 Where Faeries Live and ask for Ed or Chris

As the Pagan festival season winds down for another year, and the harvest season begins, communities across North America, and around the world start celebrating Pagan Pride. Already, pictures and videos are coming in of several different communities and how they celebrate Pagan Pride.

Typically held around the Autumnal Equinox, Edmonton’s celebration is to feature a Mabon ritual, an information booth on the different paths and organizations available in Edmonton, children’s activities, drumming and storytelling featuring Kriket Shaman, artisans and vendors, and a “share the harvest” food drive.

Guided largely by the principles of the international initiative of the Pagan Pride Project, many communities hold the festivities in a public place, to provide a positive public image of Paganism, what we believe, who we are, and help to dispel the negative beliefs held by some members of the larger community about minority religions. This is a free event, and all are welcome.

This year, the task of organizing Pagan Pride Day has fallen into the laps of the good folks at Where Faeries Live pagan shop in Edmonton. If you would like to volunteer at this event, please don’t hesitate to contact either Ed or Chris through the website, or at the Facebook page.

Edmonton’s Northern Tribes will be on hand to cover the festivities, so don’t forget to watch here after the event for full coverage, including photos and video!

Spirit Lantern Learning Circle

The Second Harvest is known by many names in the pagan community: Alban Elfed, (Light of the Sea) to the Druids; Mean Fomhair in the Irish Calenda Harvest Home, the Feast Ingathering and Mabon among most Wiccans. It derives its name from the name of the Welsh “Divine Child”, a part of the pair Mabon of the pair Mabon ap Modron (Son of the Mother) although the connection between the name and the purpose of the harvest remains obscure.

It is a ritual of thanksgiving for the fruits of the earth and recognition of the need to share them to secure the blessings of the Goddess and the God during the winter months. It is called the “Second Harvest because it is the second of three harvest festivals within the Great Wheel of the Year: Lughnasadh (August 1), Mabon (September 20), and Samhain (October 31). It is a ritual of reflection, of reaping the rewards of the goals, ideas, and plans planted at Oestara and giving thanks for the fruits of our labours.

Shapeshifter’s Embrace

Gasp!! What is that??

I assure you I have not gone to The Popular Culture. I am not talking about vampires and werewolves, our current societies obsession with shapeshifting ~ (hint: transformation). Nope, I assure you we are discussing shamanic shapeshifting. Have you ever heard the story of the Tibetan Shapeshifting Frog?? Well I know SOME of you have heard me tell the Tale.

Shapeshifting is Transformation.

Shamans have shapeshifted two ways: physically and energetically. I encourage everyone to try to physically shapeshift I really do. However… if you are expecting that in a weekend of shamanic work at Elk Island I hate to disappoint you; physical shapeshifting takes much work, much patience and dedication that even I find challenging. And is currently quite rare. However I know a story….

This weekend we are going to explore energetic shapeshifting, a shamanic tool with the ability to lead us deeper into ourselves with the sole intention of getting out of ourselves. Wait, that does make sense. Think about it, we have to enter into the chaos in order to exit into the transformation. But transformation through who and for what purpose?

Some of us are short readers so here is the information.
What: Elk Island Shamanic Wilderness Camp
When: August 19 – 21, 2011
Where: Well Elk Island National Park of Course on Highway 16 East of Edmonton in Alberta no less
Cost: A whopping $120
Registration: contact Kriket 780-934-8222 orvixsin@hotmail.com.

Or send me a psychic message and if you are not at the gates Friday night by 8, I apparently didn’t hear you. However, everyone who has always meant to come has always found a way in!!

However, there will be a list of what to bring, it would behoove you to know what I expect you to have in order to have a transformational shapeshifting experience… just sayin’.

For those not too busy Read on…

We are all energy, and we are all one. This is the basic concept behind shapeshifting. It’s all about shifting energy, being rather than becoming. This Elk Island we will work on the barriers to shapeshifting such as grudges, distrust and denial… and these are not towards others, but to ourselves. We have to enter into the chaos of ourselves, transform ourselves before we can begin to extend the same courtesy to others.

To a certain degree we are all shapeshifting all the time because our thoughts and emotions affect our energy field – the energy we project and the energy others perceive. Sometimes we do this intentionally for a specific purpose and sometimes because something affected us greatly and we lost it. (This could be a hint for some of our work)

So how are we going to go about Shapeshifting? Well I can give you a hint, there is a Peregrine Falcon in there. Oh and some journeys. Some drumming, well actually lots of drumming, some energy work, yup that. Oh and lest I forget some seton sitting. And I cannot disappoint anyone, a blindfolded walk.

There will be clans and ritual and… well lots of other things… you will have to come to find out more.

Call me: 780-934-822

I will know if you don’t… we shamans are a tad psychic.

Avalon College Wiccan Seminary

Avalon College Wiccan Seminary is offering two courses by distance education, beginning in October. Both are reading and discussion courses in our academic stream, at the introductory level, roughly equivalent to first year university.

Rit 101: Introduction to Ritual Theory. Students will work through Catherine Bell’‘Ritual: Perspectives and Dimensions’(Oxford U Press, 1997) and some supplemental material, reading and discussing one chapter every two weeks. Participation in discussion, on Skype, will be required. Students will be given a series of exercises to perform privately and be required to write short reports on their performance and experience of them.

Theology 101: Introduction to Philosophy of Religion. Students will work through William Rowe’s “Philosophy of Religion; an introduction” (Wadsworth, 1993) and some supplemental material, reading and discussing roughly one chapter every two weeks. Participation in discussion, over Skype, will be required. Students will be required to write a paper of some substance dealing with a theological problem or issue in modern Wicca, approved by the instructor.

These courses will both be limited to confirmed maximum enrollments of six students with a minimum of three. Local students will be welcome to participate in in-person discussions as well.

In the Spring 2012 term one course will be offered, also by distance education.

Rit 601: Graduate Seminar on Ritual Theory. This will be a revised version of the seminar from 2011 and will be a reading and discussion seminar at an advanced level. This challenging seminar will involve reading one book every two weeks (13 books in total) and discussing it, writing three short book reviews and an original paper on some aspect of ritual applying these theoretical models to some real-world problem or idea. Participation in discussion is required. There are no pre-requisites but it is highly recommended that students have a background in ritual and some background in theory. Some post-secondary education would also be helpful.

The course will be limited to confirmed maximum enrollments of six students with a minimum of two and will begin in April 2013.

$200 fees will be charged for the general public and $100 for members of CWABC and CWAA. This project is not formally affiliated with CWABC or CWAA. Classes will be limited to six students.

The Dean of the Seminary, Sam Wagar, is a Wiccan 3rd degree since 1985, holds an MA in History from Simon Fraser University, and has a solid record of academic publications as well as a history as a community organizer.

The Harvest Moon

The Native American full moon name of September is the famous “harvest moon.” It represents the most adventageous time-frame in which we can pick (harvest) crops from the garden. The Native Americans knew this – they knew they would have almost a half hour more time to harvest their bounty beneath the helpful luminosity of the moon.
