Edmonton Pagan Learning Circle Fellowship (EPLC)

Edmonton Pagan Learning Circle Fellowship – EPLC, is an interactive pagan spiritualist discussion group that is family friendly, focusing on shared pagan learning, The EPLC invites everyone to join the monthly circles and annual events to meet other pagans and their families, while sharing different traditions within pagan spirituality. The EPLC is not a coven, nor is EPLC a religious society; the EPLC is a fellowship dedicated to pagan spirituality and fostering growth within pagan family traditions. The EPLC exists to share experiences, learn from others, build community, havefun and teach each other and our children acceptance for different spiritual paths and lifestyles. EPLC offers pagans a safe place to start or continue their spiritual journey with a group of accepting individuals. Each month members cast an interactive circle, participate in a presentation on a topic chosen by the group, and children are given pagan friendly activities to keep them occupied during circle time. EPLC is proud to host meetings at the Pride Centre of Edmonton, 9540 111 avenue, the 3rd Saturday of each month as a way to foster acceptance in all people regardless of culture, race, religion or sexuality. EPLC Study Group August Sign Up  – September Start Up

EPLC members discussed the idea of an EPLC learning/study group -a more indepth and structured/scheduled learning group that is a self directed year and a day pagan course that can be flushed out to fit the group dynamics based on who is interested in attending and how often the group can meet or how much commitment would be expected. The cost would be free,as are all EPLC activities, however there would be a donation request for those taking part to cover supplies or operational costs for study group participants as needed. It will be a self guided path with facilitated topics and discussions and interactive group activities – this is different from EPLC Fellowship Circles where the EPLC Study Group will be more formal in the structure and the commitment required by individuals attend and work together to intentionally make a group like this work.

Purpose: to learn from others and share knowledge to further a personal path of spiritual choices

Concepts: Allowing all participants to ~Think out loud ~Share ideas ~Learn from one another by charting a learning plan for the group and taking one topic at a time say for a week/month and each member try and give their input on that subject and topic.

The objective would be for each person to further their own spiritual path but have a reason to further push their personal growth; in other words, participants would have to be accountable to the group for assignments, tasks and HOMEWORK in order to ensure that everyone is contributing to group education but is furthering their personal path.  People interested in this ongoing commitment to spiritual learning should send a email indicating interest in the group with their contact information. We have a beautiful location, and its kid friendly, to work from and will be hosting a planning meeting in August with hopes of a start up in September 2011; please let Kaldra know in a private message if you are interested in the EPLC Fellowship Study Group and we will keep you in the loop of updates.

Date: TBA – Friday evening – at least once a month perhaps weekly or twice a month depending on what the group wants.
Time: 7:00 p.m.
Location: Suite 217, 11520 100 Ave., Academy Place, Edmonton
Cost: By donation

Avalon College Wiccan Seminary

Avalon College Wiccan Seminary is offering two courses by distance education, beginning in October. Both are reading and discussion courses in our academic stream, at the introductory level, roughly equivalent to first year university.

Rit 101: Introduction to Ritual Theory. Students will work through Catherine Bell’‘Ritual: Perspectives and Dimensions’(Oxford U Press, 1997) and some supplemental material, reading and discussing one chapter every two weeks. Participation in discussion, on Skype, will be required. Students will be given a series of exercises to perform privately and be required to write short reports on their performance and experience of them.

Theology 101: Introduction to Philosophy of Religion. Students will work through William Rowe’s “Philosophy of Religion; an introduction”  (Wadsworth, 1993) and some supplemental material, reading and discussing roughly one chapter every two weeks. Participation in discussion, over Skype, will be required. Students will be required to write a paper of some substance dealing with a theological problem or issue in modern Wicca, approved by the instructor.

These courses will both be limited to confirmed maximum enrollments of six students with a minimum of three. Local students will be welcome to participate in in-person discussions as well.

In the Spring 2012 term one course will be offered, also by distance education.

Rit 601: Graduate Seminar on Ritual Theory. This will be a revised version of the seminar from 2011 and will be a reading and discussion seminar at an advanced level. This challenging seminar will involve reading one book every two weeks (13 books in total) and discussing it, writing three short book reviews and an original paper on some aspect of ritual applying these theoretical models to some real-world problem or idea. Participation in discussion is required. There are no pre-requisites but it is highly recommended that students have a background in ritual and some background in theory. Some post-secondary education would also be helpful.

The course will be limited to confirmed maximum enrollments of six students with a minimum of two and will begin in April 2013.

$200 fees will be charged for the general public and $100 for members of CWABC and CWAA.  This project is not formally affiliated with CWABC or CWAA.

The Dean of the Seminary, Sam Wagar, is a Wiccan 3rd degree since 1985, holds an MA in History from Simon Fraser University, and has a solid record of academic publications as well as a history as a community organizer.

The Red Moon

Those lazy days of summer when the moon is watched in its fullness and widens herself to the admiring sun. This is the month when summer kisses the moon most tender and we most often see a blush-colored or reddish hued moon. To the tribes of the Great Lakes it is a Sturgeon moon because this is when they are caught most.

Don’t forget to put your crystals, stones, and tools out in the moonlight this evening!
