BDSM Review of 50 Shades of Grey

by Denika– a longtime member of Edmonton’s BDSM community. Her unique perspective offers an “insiders” look at the popular series that, for many, is an introduction to the world of Dominant and submissive lifestyle.

Fifty Shades of Mommy Porn

Everywhere I looked, Fifty Shades of Grey seemed to be lurking. The airport, cafe’s, the gym and even at work. That dark cover with the silver tie embossed on it peeking out of purses and backpacks as blushing readers indulged in the soft porn like a safe, afternoon quickie.

Could BDSM be going mainstream?  There was definitely a huge influx of Soccer Mom’s showing up at play-parties lately. I gave in to the peer pressure and the whispers of, ‘have you read this?’

I really should know better, peer pressure usually doesn’t end with good choices. Reading the book was like being invited out for a good steak dinner, you are expecting a nice filet mignon or porter house and instead are served Ritz Crackers and Cheese Whiz.

The writing is simple, you can tell this started as fanfiction. Female protagonist- Ana – cries a lot… at least once every two pages. When she isn’t crying she is whining and self absorbed. She uses emotional manipulation and demands others change around her to fit HER needs while she stays locked in her own weepy self absorbed bubble. In short, she makes women look bad.  I nearly closed the book 5 pages in, but then the author introduced the antagonist `Christian. He is why I kept reading.  He is written as strong, confident, demanding and intelligent. The submissive in me perked up like a pot of coffee. “Hellooo Sir!”

Maybe there was some hope for this book yet.

He outlines his desires, his world and boundaries very clearly to Ana – even changes them drastically when they don’t meet her expectations, yet still she cries.. and often starves herself and over all acts like a spoiled brat to get MORE from him. She has to have MORE, the poor guy can’t give enough! She effectively neuters him.  Where is this BDSM the book promised?? Oh, okay, he spanks her, and for some that is risqué and that is awesome but I’m greedy, I want more time written in this Red Room of Pain, as Ana calls it.  By the end of the book she is now demanding he punish her (she sucks as a submissive… just saying) to know what he is capable of. He thinks it is a bad idea and I agree along with him! But she cries…again, and get’s what she wants. He goes over the safe words several times before he complies. And she freaks, he is a monster, he is broken, there is something “wrong” with him and she leaves him because she cannot handle what and who he is.

She never safe worded!!!

This bothers me a lot. She had the power at anytime to say stop and she never did and then blames him. How is this good writing? How is this a good story??  By the end of the book I wanted to hand her a bottle of anti-depressants, some Kleenex and possibly the number to a good shrink. And Christian.. he was so promising. My inner submissive was mortified for him. I wanted to find and hand him back his balls!

If you are looking to read porn with a little plot, it has good porn. If you are looking for an SM positive book this isn’t it. She seems to want to characterize that if you are a sadist or like BDSM there must be something wrong with you, and it needs to be fixed. I highly recommend Anne Rice’s Beauty Series for exceptional SM fantasy or Anais Nin.

“We are considered ‘edge’ players, as we delve into breath play, blood play, and heavy impact scenes. We follow the concept of R.A.C.K. (risk aware consensual kink) I am also an avid reader and make time to read pretty much anything I can get my hands on.”
